Toolbars

The toolbars provide the functions for editing and formatting your document.  We will be discussing the different menus and buttons as we learn more about Word.

To move a toolbar, point to the shaded area on the left side of the toolbar, and click and drag the four-headed arrow.  If a toolbar moves accidentally, double click it to move it back to its original

location.

If a toolbar is closed accidentally, it can be easily reopened.  From the View menu, choose Toolbars, to display the Toolbars list.  Toolbars with a check are displayed.  To turn toolbars on and off, click on them in this list.

Make Word 2002 Easier To Use

There are some software settings you may wish to change to make your Word 2002 easier to use.

  • Open one copy of Microsoft Word.  (Check on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen to be sure you don’t have multiple Word documents open.)

  • From the Tools menu, choose Options.  In the Options window, click the General Tab.

  • Remove the checkmark from “Automatically create Drawing Canvas when inserting AutoShapes”

  • Click the View tab.

  • The task pane (the large, vertical bar on the right side of the Word window) is set to open each time Word opens.  If you do not want the task pane to open automatically, remove the checkmark from “Startup Task Pane”.  The task pane can be turned on and off manually using the View menu, Task Pane.

  • Click OK.  These changes should be permanent.

  • To see full menus and two rows of toolbar buttons, from the Tools menu, choose Customize.

  • From the Options tab of the Customize window, click to enable the checks next to “Show Standard and Formatting Toolbars on two rows” and  “Always show full menus”.

  • Click Close. These changes should be permanent.
