Double Click and Type

As you move your mouse I-beam around a blank Word document, notice how the I-beam changes.  Attached to the I-beam is an alignment icon indicating left, center or right alignment.

Word‘s Double Click and Type feature allows you to double click any place on a blank page you wish to type.  Word will automatically put in the necessary paragraph returns to move your insertion point to the place you double clicked.  It will also change the paragraph alignment to the type that was displayed on the I-beam when you double clicked.

The Insertion Point

Text will insert into a Word document at the insertion point.  (To switch to overtype mode, press the Insert key on the keyboard.  To return to Insert mode, press the Insert key again.)

To position the insertion point in your document:

  • Move the I-beam mouse pointer to the spot you wish to insert text and click.

  • Use the arrow keys on the keyboard.

  • Ctrl/Home keystroke combination moves the insertion point to the beginning of your document.

  • Ctrl/End keystroke combination moves the insertion point to the end of your document.

  • The scroll bars do not move the insertion point.

Insert blank lines into a document

  • To insert a blank line into a document, press the Enter key to insert a paragraph return.

  • To move text down the page, insert paragraph returns in front of the text.

  • To delete blank lines, delete the paragraph returns.

  • To see inserted paragraph returns, click the Show/Hide button  on the standard toolbar.

Backspace and Delete

  • The Backspace key will erase characters to the left of the insertion point.

  • The Delete key will erase characters to the right of the insertion point.  Delete will also erase selected items.

  • To make editing or formatting changes to text, the text must be selected first.

Text Selection Methods

  • Click and drag across text with the mouse

  • Click and Shift/click--For large amounts of text, click at the start of the selection, scroll to the end of the selection, and Shift/click at the end.

  • Control/click to select non-contiguous selections  (Word 2002 only)

  • Click in the left margin to select a line of text

  • Click and drag in the left margin to select a block of text

  • Double click to select a single word.

  • Triple click to select a paragraph

  • Control/a will select all.  Select All is also on the Edit menu.

Typing Replaces Selection and Undo

In Windows-based applications, including Microsoft Word, selected text will be replaced by typing.  If you accidentally replace selected text, click the Undo button on the standard toolbar.  In Word, you can undo changes back to the last time you saved.

Moving and Copying Text

Selected text or graphics can moved or copied to new locations within a document.  Text can also be moved between documents and between applications.  To move text, cut and paste.  To copy text, copy and paste.  When text is cut or copied it is stored temporarily on the “clipboard.”  The clipboard is a Windows feature that is used to store files, text and graphics.  Multiple selections can be stored on the clipboard at one time.  The clipboard selections will display in the task pane.  To paste a selection, click on it.  Clipboard selections can be pasted repeatedly.

To move or copy selected text or graphics:

  • Select the text or graphic.

  • From the Edit menu, choose Cut.  (Or click the Cut  button)

  • Position the insertion point at the place in the document you want the cut text or graphic to insert.

  • From the Edit menu, choose Paste.  You can also click the Paste  button or select an item to paste from the Clipboard task pane.

  • To copy text, follow the steps above, but from the Edit menu, choose Copy instead of Cut.  (Or click the Copy  button)

Drag and Drop

Selected text or graphics can also be moved short distances by dragging with the mouse.  To drag and drop text:

  • Select the text you wish to move.

  • Point the mouse pointer at the selection.  When the pointer changes from an I-beam to a pointer, click and drag the selection to the new location.  The shadowed insertion point will indicate where the text will insert when the mouse is released.

  • If text is accidentally moved via drag and drop, click the Undo button on the standard toolbar.

Changing the appearance of your text once it has been typed and edited is called formatting.  You can make formatting changes before or after text is typed.  To change text after it has been typed, remember to select the text first.

Select the font from the Font list on the Formatting toolbar and type the text.  If listed fonts are not displaying in their font, follow these steps:

  • From the Tools menu, choose Customize

To change text that has already been typed, select the text, and choose a font from the font list.

For more font formatting choices, from the Format menu, choose Font to open the Font dialog box.  Remember to select the text you want to change first.

Default Font

To change the default font for all new blank documents:

  1. From the Format menu, choose Font.

  2. From the Font dialog box, choose the font and font size.

  3. Click the Default button and choose Yes.

  4. This is a permanent change.  However, the default font can be changed again following the above steps.
