Create a new document

  • From the File menu, choose New

  • From the Task Pane, select Blank Document or New from Template

  • Or, click the New document button  (first button on the Standard toolbar)

  • Remember to save your new document early in the process of creating it.  Then, continue to save your changes as you edit the document.  See the instructions for Saving below.

Save a document

Save early and save your changes often!!!

  • To save, from the File menu, choose Save

  • Or, click the Save button on the Standard toolbar

  • The first time you save you must name your file and assign it to a storage location in the Windows storage system.

Name and save the document in My Documents folder on your computer’s hard drive.  My Documents is the default location for saving documents.

Save and Save As:  What’s the difference?

  • Use Save the first time you save and to save editing changes to a document.

  • Use Save As to save a copy of a document in a different storage location.

  • Use Save As to create a new document from changes you made to an existing document.  To do this, open the document, make the changes and use Save As to give the changed document a new name.  The original document will be unchanged and closed.

Open an Existing Document

  • From the File menu, chose Open

  • In the Open dialog box, navigate to the storage location for the document you wish to open

  • Double click to open folders

  • Double click on the document icon to open the document or click the Open button on the dialog box

View a Document

To see your document the way it will look when it is printed, from the View Menu, choose Print Layout.  Word is easier to use if you stay in Print Layout view all the time.  Use the zoom button on the standard toolbar to zoom in and out and quickly see the page layout.

Show and Hide White Space

Word 2002 will give you an option to show or hide white space at the top and bottom of a document.  Point to the bottom of a page and an icon with two arrows will appear.  If you click when the icon is displayed, you will either hide or show white space.
