Class Exercise - A Word Processing Exercise

Open Microsoft Word on your computer. Word normally open with a blank document To open a blank sheet of paper, move the Mouse Pointer/Arrow to the upper left Tool Bar click the White Sheet Icon with the corner turned over.  A new document/blank page will appear on your screen.

Type in the following:

Each person has their own peculiar and particular way of getting at and doing things and is sometimes criticized because that way is not the one adopted by others.  The great idea is to complete what you set out to do. A. Lincoln

After you have finished typing, make the following changes:

Change the word sometimes in the first sentence to the word often. Change the word complete in the last sentence to accomplish.

To change a word in a line: (two ways to do this!) Practice both 1 & 2.

1. Position the Mouse Pointer to the middle of the word sometimes and double click to select/highlight the word and then press the Delete key.  After deleting the word sometimes, type in the word often
Note: The Mouse Pointer changes to an I Beam over text. 

2. Position the Mouse I Beam at the end of the word complete in the last sentence and Left Click to bring the insertion point/flashing curser to the end of the word, then press the Backspace key until the word is deleted. After deleting the word complete, type in the word accomplish.

To change one or more lines of text:

Place your Mouse Pointer to the left of the first letter of the first line until it becomes an arrow facing in. Press down on the left button of your mouse While you are pressing down on the left button, move the Mouse Pointer down the left side of the page until all the lines in the quote are highlighted. This is called Selecting or Highlighting your text. Take your finger off the left button. Press and release the delete button.

The quote should disappear.  Retype a paraphrase of the quote.  To get the quote back, move the Mouse Pointer up to the Undo Arrow on the top Tool Bar and left click your mouse several times until the quote reappears.

 

CHANGING FONTS (text style)

Highlight the entire quote.

Press the Ctrl button (the lower left button on the keyboard) with your left hand.  While you are pressing the Ctrl button, press the A key with your right hand.  All of your text should be highlighted.

Go to white box on the Tool Bar above that has the word Times New Roman printed in it.  Click once on the down arrow to the right of the word Times New Roman.

A box will appear below.  Put your Mouse Pointer on the box with the down arrow at the bottom of the box and click, several times, until the words Brush Script MT appear in the box.  Put your arrow anywhere on the words Brush Script MT and click.  Your text should change to a different style of writing.  Put your Mouse Pointer anywhere on the white screen, except the left margin, and click once to make the box disappear.

Go to the box with the number 16Click once on the down arrow to the right of number 16.  A box will appear with a succession of numbers.  Go to number 20 and click on the number.  Watch the size of your text change.

Click you Mouse Pointer on the white screen and click once to make the number drop down box disappear.  The number box may disappear automatically without performing this step.

 

To print a document:

Click on File Menu, then Click Print.  A large Dialog Box will open. Click the OK Button on the bottom right to print the page(s)

Another way to print:

With your left hand press down the Ctrl button and press the letter P button with your right hand.  A large gray dialog box will appear on the screen.  Click the OK button on the bottom right to print the page(s).
